Abstract：This paper introduces one of Susan Fainstein's most notable works, The City Builder,on its background, content, major contribution, and lasting inf luence. It is followed by tracing Feinstein's academic life course. The difference between the first version in 1994 and the second version in 2001 is especially highlighted, then the controversy about the book and its inspirations are discussed in the end.
