Abstract:The application of artificial intelligenceis making progress in urban and regional planning.First, this paper gives a brief retrospect on the historyof urban model. Then, as a major part of the artificialintelligence technology, the artificial life computermodel is also introduced. In specific, some featuresand functions of the CA(Cellular Automaton) model,a simple form of the artificial life, is discussed byusing the SLEUTH program on two case metropolitanareas, Lisbon and Porto, to inform that the CA model, based on its ability of self-learning(a basiccharacteristic of artificial life), has a wide universality. It can be used to distinguish the local character, or say,the regional DNA, from the global character, whichwill bring regional studies, urban studies, and urbanplanning far-reaching influences.
